Underpinned by current research and innovation, PLATSEN offers fresh and diverse perspectives on how a site - a city block, town or region - can act as a catalyst for sustainability.

PLATSEN is a vibrant, interdisciplinary arena for collaboration and change. Decision makers, politicians, scientists, NGOs, public and private sector meet here in order to exchange knowledge, network, generate new initiatives and design the future.

Annika Nordlund

Annika Nordlund is Associate Professor in Psychology at Umeå University and Director of Research at the Transportation Research Unit (TRUM) Umeå University. Annika's research interest is broadly found within the areas of environmental and social psychology, and more specifically within the influence of psychological factors in different types of environmentally relevant behavior.

Carina Aschan is Project Coordinator for the Smart University City Cooperation in Umeå, and also coordinates Umeås partnership within the Horizon2020 Smart Cities initiative Ruggedised.

Carl Wangel

Gullers
Carl Wangel has a master in human geography and works as a Communication Strategist at Gullers Grupp. Together with Umeå municipality he has initiated the project Prata Plats. Prata Plats is a digital plattform for place development, planning and dialogue aiming to increase participation and democracy and at the same time make processes for planning and building more efficient. Carl is also a board member in FFS, Föreningen för Samhällsplanering.

Christer Åhlund

Christer Åhlund is a Professor of Pervasive and Mobile Computing and Scientific Director of the Enabling ICT research group at Luleå University of Technology.

Cindy Kohtala

Aalto University
Cindy Kohtala is a Postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Design, Aalto University. Her research interests include examining grassroot digital fabrication communities, urban activism and social movements. Cindy Kohtala also teaches and writes about Sustainable Design.

Dolly Jørgensen

Luleå University of Technology
Dolly Jørgensen, Associate Professor of Environment and Technology History at Luleå University of Technology, has written on modern environmental policy related to restoration and rewilding, medieval forestry and urban sanitation, and environmentalism in science fiction. She is particularly interested in the human-animal relationship and is currently studying animal reintroduction and ideas of belonging in Scandinavia during the 20th century.

Elin Pietroni is Head of Comprehensive Planning for the city of Umeå.

Ellen van der Werff

University of Groningen
Ellen van der Werff is Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, working in the environmental psychology group. Her research focuses on factors influencing environmental behaviour and strategies to promote pro-environmental actions. Ellen's main research interests are environmental self-identity, values and incentives to promote behavioural change. She enjoys collaborating with researchers from other disciplines and applying her research to real life problems.

Erica Eneqvist

SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden
Erica Eneqvist works as Project Coordinator within the areas City Development, Governance and Sustainability at SP. She has developed a tool box together with municipalities, tools that towns and cities can employ to help their inhabitants make more sustainable lifestyle choices. 

Eva Ahlner

Eva Ahlner is Senior Advisor at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and works as national coordinator for the implementation of the United Nations framework of programmes, 10YFP, aiming to disrupt unsustainable production and consumption. 

Göran Ernstsson

Umeå Energi
Göran Ernstsson is the CEO of Umeå Energi, supplier of heating. electricity and the fastest broadband connection in the western hemisphere. Umeå Energi are aiming for climate neutrality by 2018. They have switched business model from selling to renting solar cells, and are now attracting new types of younger households to install solar.

James Ehrlich

ReGen Villages
James Ehrlich is the founder of ReGen Villages, a company focused on creating sustainable living environments for the circular economy. The first pilot ReGen village is now being built in Almere outside Amsterdam, and was showcased at the 2016 Venice Biennale. James has been a serial entrepreneur in Silicon Valley for over 25 years, with a number of successful exits within the tech and media sector. He is Senior Technologist at Stanford, Senior Fellow at the Opus Novus consortium at NASA, and entrepreneur in residence at the Stanford Peace Innovation Lab, Centre of Design Research. He has produced mainstream media content on sustainability and organice farming, and is the author of the best selling book Organic Living (Hachette, 2007)

Joacim Rocklöv

Umeå University
Joacim Rocklöv, an Associate Professor within Epidemiology and Global Health. His research focuses on modelling the relationships between weather, climate and climate change and health, and making predictions of climate sensitive diseases for adaptation and preparedness purposes.

Johan Jansson

Lund University
Johan Jansson is an Associate Professor in Business Administration with a focus on sustainable consumption. He recently took up a position at Lund University after having worked at Umeå School of Business and Economics. His research and teaching has centered around consumer pro-environmental attitudes, norms and behaviors but also on CSR work in SME's and on corporate citizenship.

Joakim Rytterborn

Plantagon
Plantagon is an American-Swedish corporation working within urban vertical farming. The first Plantagon building is being realised in Linköping with a multi-use structure combining offices and food production. Joakim Rytterborn is head of R&D at Plantagon, working with development and implementation of methods and techniques for growing food in closed-loop systems, smart energy systems and reutilization of urban resources. His expertise includes integration of connected systems within urban functions e.g. surplus energy, heat spillage, water efficient techniques and reuse of organic waste.

Johan Sandström

Johan Sandström is a Energy and Climate Strategist at Umeå Municipality with a long-standing experience from local and regional development within the areas of energy, transportation and consumption. Johan has project managed the Umeå application for European Green Capital, and will work as a moderator for PLATSEN.

Johanna Hallin

Lumen Behavior
Johanna Hallin is founder and CEO of Lumen Behavior. She has worked with sustainability and human rights in over 70 countries, from Belarus to Burma by way of the United States. Johanna is a champion of Human Centered Business supporting companies to transcend sustainability and track purpose, empathy, systems approach and resilience in core business.

Karin Markides is professor in analytical chemistry and chair of the Swedish Scientific Council for Sustainability.

Katrin H. Sten

Katrin H. Sten is co-director of Sliperiet, Umeå University and senior lecturer in architectural history. Katrin is the coordinator for the ERDF project "Den koldioxidsnåla platsen", a collaboration between Umeå Municipality and Umeå University. Her field of research is sustainable urban development, place making and issues related to public space.

Klaus Kubeczko

Austrian Institute of Technology
Klaus Kubeczko holds a doctoral degree in economics and social sciences. He has been working on several foresight processes and RTI-policy strategies dealing with new mission orientation towards grand societal challenges. His research focus lies on developing and applying RTI system heuristics to legitimize RTI-policies such as functional innovation systems approach, system innovation and complex innovation systems. Klaus will work as the Innovation Manager in the Horizon2020 Smart cities project Rugedised together with the three Lighthouse cities Rotterdam, Umeå and Glasgow.

Linda Gustafsson

Umeå Municipality
Linda Gustafsson is Equality Strategist at Umeå Municipality. She is in charge of the project The Gendered Landscape 2.0, which is funded by the National Housing Board. The method gendered landscape is about visualising the gendered structures of power in the city and the project aims to digitize the work through the use of virtual reality.

Maria Nilsson

Umeå universitet
Maria Nilsson, researcher within Epidemiology and Global Health at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine. Maria's area of research is climate change and health as well as tobacco prevention and policy. She is involved in a European research project called HOPE - Household Preferences for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Four European High Income Countries, where Umeå is a case among others.

Niklas Jansson is entrepreneur and CEO for Delbar, an application that enables social networks to rent, buy and sell things and services in a new way.

Olivier Keech

Umeå universitet
Olivier Keech is assistant professor at the department of Plant Physiology, UPSC, Umeå University. For PLATSEN, he together with a team of scientists has built an experimental multi-trophic farming setup, comprising various approaches such as aquaculture, compost recycling, bioreactors as well as aero-/hydroponics. The setup proposes a potential model for sustainable food production.

Peter Sköld

Umeå universitet
Peter Sköld, a Professor of history and Director of ARCUM, Arctic Centre at Umeå University. His area of research is historical demography and this has resulted in a number of studies about indigenous people and in particular the Sami on issues around health, climate, and natural resources. ARCUM assembles a strong research environment with national proficiency in extensive research areas and has strategically developed a concept, which provides a multi-disciplinary response to present, and future demands of research-based knowledge for a sustainable development in the north.

Sabina Andrén

Sabina Andrén is the World Wildlife Fund Programme Coordinator for Sustainable Cities. The WWF is dedicated to increasing political leadership, public engagement and entrepreneurship to transform cities. Working towards the vision of One Planet Future - a future living planet where people in all nations have the opportunities of a quality life, and where the biological diversity of the planet is ensured in a sustainable manner.

Sofia Lundberg

Umeå University
Sofia Lundberg is Associate Professor of Economics and she is also Rector of Umeå School of Business. Her research deals with markets where public and private actors meet. She has studied the evaluation models of public procurement, the issue of quality in relation to the tendering of public activity, combinatorial procurement cartels in public procurement and public procurement as an environmental policy instrument. She was secretary to the interim report of the Procurement Committee.

Therese Balksjö

Therese Balksjö works for Interactive Institute Swedish ICT. She explores future user experiences through human-centered information and communication technology, visualization and interaction design. Therese Balksjö will give an insights into the research area Energy efficiency and Sustainable lifestyles giving concrete examples from ongoing projects.

Thomas Olofsson

Umeå universitet
Thomas Olofsson is Professor in Energy Efficiency with a focus on buildings. His main research interests are energy demand predictions and evaluations of energy efficiency for buildings. The evaluations methods include simple physical simulation models as well analytical methods. The investigations are conducted on single family buildings, multifamily buildings, commercial buildings and green-houses. Aside from pure research, Prof. Olofsson has been involved in a number of collaboration projects ensuring practical application of current research in city development, e.g. Hållbara Ålidhem, a project awarded with the prestigious Sustainable Energy Europe Awards. He was Climate Ambassador for the region of Västerbotten from 2014 to 2016.

Viktoria Walldin

White Arkitekter
When employed at White, Viktoria was the first anthropologist employed to work in-house at the architecture firm. City planning and architecture strive to make people thrive in their environments, but there is a lack of methods to infuse the inhabitant perspective into planning phases. Viktoria brings new knowledge and perspectives to the table, reshaping these processes.
